Life and register readings
The life of Mustafa Talip Efendi began in Diyarbakır in 1839/40 (AH 1255). Mustafa Talip studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 17, in 1856/57, Mustafa Talip began work. The first annual entry, for 1856/57, names Mustafa Talip as a candidate official (Mülazım), with no place. For 1862 to 1865 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1861/62 give a second post, in Al-Aziziyah as tahrirat kâtibi. Mustafa Talip then moved to four places in 33 years, with a rise to Mal Muduru in 1865/66. Alongside, the lists for 1896/97 give a second post, in a post with no place named as a district governor (Kaymakam). The last post was in Cezire again in 1898/99. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
The salary went from 750 kuruş a month in 1861/62 to 3,000 in 1871/72, the peak, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 2,500 kuruş. Over 17 years the salaries add up to 350,700 kuruş, 4.1 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
