Life and register readings
Born in Tokat in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Odabaşıyan Rupen Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). The personnel record dates the first work to 1884/85, after the first annual entry, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Odabaşıyan Rupen as Fen Mektebi öğrencisi in Istanbul. The last posts were in Sivas from 1884 to 1890. The lists give Infisal for 1889/90 instead of a title.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1884/85, in Sivas, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1889/90.
