Life and register readings
Mehmed Faik Efendi was born in Haleb in 1872/73 (AH 1289); the father's occupation was "Haleb vilayeti muhasebe kalemi kâtibi". At about 15, in 1886/87, Mehmed Faik began work, on a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, names Mehmed Faik as Haleb Muhasebe Evrak mukayyidliği refakati, with no place. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Faik to Kilis from 1888 to 1890. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1908 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Merkez Kol Tahsilat memurluğu. Alongside, the lists for 1893/94 give a second post, in Baghdad as Ağnam Silahhane memurluğu. The lists give Infisal for 1907/08 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1886/87 to a peak of 900 in 1889/90, when four in five paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 266.5 kuruş. In all, 21 years of salary come to 117,198 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
