Life and register readings

Mehmed Kâmil Paşa was born in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) in 1832/33 (AH 1248); the father's occupation was "Topçu Asakir-i Şahane Yüzbaşısı". Work began in Misir in 1848/49, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1848/49, places Mehmed Kâmil in Misir as Mısır Hidiviye baştercümanlık ve muavinlik hizmeti. Mehmed Kâmil then moved to Kibris from 1860 to 1864. The last entries, from 1868 to 1910, name Mehmed Kâmil as Yabancı hanedan mensuplarına mihmandar, with a rise to Sadrazam in 1908/09, with no place. Few careers in the lists are as long; 10 of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 63 years or more.

Pay rose from 4,000 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 85,000 in 1895/96, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 30,000 kuruş. Mehmed Kâmil was the best paid official of the lists in 1884/85, from 1886 to 1891 and in 1909/10; 19 of the 7,179 officials with a salary ever were. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 13,980,000 kuruş, 107.6 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by no other of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
