Life and register readings
Born in Tirana (Tiran) in 1839/40 (AH 1255), Süleyman Sami Efendi came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Bakkal". At about 20, in 1859/60, Süleyman Sami began work in Tirana, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1859/60, with Süleyman Sami as Aşar mültezimi kâtibi in Tirana, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1862/63. The lists have no entry for 1863 to 1868. Süleyman Sami then moved to Durrës (Dıraç) from 1868 to 1871. Alongside, the lists for 1870 to 1872 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Memleha kâtibi. The annual lists then follow Süleyman Sami back to Tirana from 1872 to 1876. For 1876 to 1879 and 1880 to 1883 the lists have no entry. Next came a return to Tirana from 1883 to 1886. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1886 give a second post, in Durrës as Tahrirat mukayyidi.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to 400 in 1868/69, the peak, in Durrës, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 47,700 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1885/86.
