Life and register readings
Mustafa Efendi was born in Pristina (Priştine) in 1855/56 (AH 1272). At about 25, in 1880/81, Mustafa began work in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka), on a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Mustafa in Didymoteicho as Polis neferi. Alongside, the lists for 1880 to 1884 give a second post, in Komotini as Polis neferi. Mustafa then moved to a post with no place named from 1884 to 1902, with a rise to police commissioner, second class (2. Sınıf Polis Komiseri) in 1899/1900 and to chief police commissioner (Başkomiser) in 1900/01. Alongside, the lists for 1901 to 1904 give a second post, in Istanbul as 11. İstasyon Bölüğü polis komiseri. The lists have no entry for 1904 to 1909. The last entry, for 1909/10, names Mustafa as Polislikten ihraç (Azil), with no place. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1883/84 and Azil (dismissal) for 1901/02 instead of a title.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 1,000 in 1900/01, the peak, as Başkomiser, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 122,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
