Life and register readings
Born in Harput in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mustafa Zekai Efendi came from the İslam community. At about 16, in 1871/72, Mustafa Zekai began work in Istanbul. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Mustafa Zekai as Adliye Mezabıt Kalemi mülazımı in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The lists have no entry for 1887 to 1895 and 1900 to 1911. The last posts were in Tripoli (Trablusşam) from 1911 to 1913. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
The salary went from 20 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 5,000 in 1911/12, the peak, in Tripoli, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less.
