Life and register readings
Mehmed Cemil Bey was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1866/67 (AH 1283); the father was a mayor (belediye reisi). At about 15, in 1880/81, Mehmed Cemil began work in Thessaloniki. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Mehmed Cemil in Thessaloniki, the birthplace, as Selanik vilayeti mektubî kalemi mülazımı, where the entries run to 1888/89.
