Life and register readings

Mehmed Rüşdü Bey was born in Kafkasya in 1849/50 (AH 1266). At about 26, in 1876/77, Mehmed Rüşdü began work in Narman (Namervan), on a first salary of 360 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmed Rüşdü in Narman as Narman nahiye müdürü. Mehmed Rüşdü then moved to a post with no place named from 1880 to 1887, then six places in 11 years, from Fatsa to Erbil. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1880. The last post was in Kifri (Salahiye) in 1898/99. For 1899 to 1902 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1877/78; İstifa (resignation) for 1886/87; Azil (dismissal) for 1887/88 and 1902/03. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 4 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.

The salary went from 360 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 1,575 in 1897/98, the peak, in Erbil, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 193,824 kuruş, 2.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
