Life and register readings
İlyas Kalost Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Katolik community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in 1884/85, at about 17, on a first salary of 800 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with İlyas Kalost as Ta‘dad-ı ağnam kâtibi and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1885 to 1891.
