Life and register readings

Born in Bursa in 1835/36 (AH 1251), Mehmed Faik Bey came from the İslam community; the father was a tax farmer (mültezim). Work began in 1857/58, at about 22, on a first salary of 80 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1857/58, names Mehmed Faik as mızıka-yı hümâyun hizmeti, with no place. Next came Beirut (Beyrut), Beykoz and İzmit from 1868 to 1876, then a post with no place named from 1876 to 1881. Mehmed Faik then moved to Adana in 1886/87. Alongside, the lists for 1886/87 give a second post, in a post with no place named as beytü'l mal ve mahlûlât müdiriyeti. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Faik to Aydın in 1888/89. Alongside, the lists for 1888 to 1901 give a second post, in a post with no place named as (ilâveten).

Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to a peak of 7,500 in 1886/87, in Adana, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 810,660 kuruş, 8.1 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The peak was 93.8 times the first salary, a rise matched by fewer than 2 per cent of the 2,724 officials paid for ten years or more. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
