Yahya Reşit Efendi

The life of Yahya Reşit Efendi began in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki); the father's occupation was "Âlim". Yahya Reşit began work in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291). The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Yahya Reşit in Istanbul as İstanbul müderrisi, ibtidâ-i hâriç. The annual lists then follow Yahya Reşit to a post with no place named from 1884 to 1898. Alongside, the lists for 1892 to 1894 give a second post, in Jerusalem as Kudüs mevleviyeti zabiti. Yahya Reşit then moved to Medina (Medine) in 1897/98, then Misir from 1900 to 1910. Alongside, the lists for 1909 to 1911 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Meclis-i Tetkikat-ı Şer'iye reisi. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for only 37 of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.

Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 8,000 in 1909/10, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 12 years of salary come to 482,244 kuruş, 7.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The peak was 80 times the first salary, a rise matched by fewer than 3 per cent of the 2,724 officials paid for ten years or more. The final annual entry is for 1911.
