Life and register readings
Mahmud Midhat Efendi was born in Harput in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the İslam community. At about 26, in 1876/77, Mahmud Midhat began work in Kemaliye (Eğin), on a first salary of 475 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mahmud Midhat in Kemaliye as Mal Muduru. The annual lists then follow Mahmud Midhat to Ergani from 1878 to 1879. Alongside, the lists for 1878/79 give a second post, in Kemaliye as Mal Muduru, with a rise to Mal Muduru. Next came Ergani in 1883/84. Alongside, the lists for 1883 to 1887 give a second post, in a post with no place named as a tithe official (Aşar Memuru). Alongside, the lists for 1886 to 1888 give a second post, in Malatya as Muhasebe başkâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1894. Alongside, the lists for 1887 to 1895 give a second post, in Mazgirt as Mal Muduru. The last posts were in Malatya again from 1907 to 1909.
Pay rose from 475 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 800 in 1887/88, as Mal Muduru in Mazgirt, when three in four paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 600 kuruş. Over ten years pay ended below where it began, 150 kuruş against 475. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
