Mahmud Derviş Efendi was born in Sivas in 1845/46 (AH 1262); the father was a cavalryman holding a fief (sipahi). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). Mahmud Derviş began work in 1875/76, at about 29. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, names Mahmud Derviş as stajyer, with no place.
