Life and register readings
Born in Antalya in 1839/40 (AH 1255), Mehmed Emin Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 15, in 1853/54, Mehmed Emin began work in Antalya, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1853/54, places Mehmed Emin in Antalya, the birthplace, as Şer‘iyye Mahkemesi mukayyidi. Mehmed Emin then moved to Istanbul from 1855 to 1861. For 1863 to 1867 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1862/63 give a second post, in Antalya as Geçici ağnam kâtibi. The last entries, from 1867 to 1889, name Mehmed Emin as Defter-i Hâkânî Kalemi başkâtibi, with no place.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to a peak of 500 in 1862/63, in Antalya, when 53 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 26 years of salary come to 122,640 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1888/89.
