Life and register readings
İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Sivas in 1841/42 (AH 1257). At about 14, in 1854/55, İbrahim Ethem began work, on a first salary of 225 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1854/55, places İbrahim Ethem in Sivas, the birthplace, as Tahrirat kalemi stajyeri, where the entries run to 1870/71. The lists have no entry for 1855 to 1863, 1864 to 1870 and 1871 to 1876. İbrahim Ethem then moved to Istanbul in 1876/77, then back to Sivas from 1878 to 1891, with a rise to Nüfus nazırı in 1883/84.
