Life and register readings
Born in Tokat in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mustafa Kâni Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) in 1869/70, at about 16. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Mustafa Kâni as Telgrafhane stajyeri in Sulaymaniyah, where the entries run to 1873/74. Mustafa Kâni then moved to Kirkuk (Kerkük), Sulaymaniyah and Altun Kupri (Altınköprü) from 1874 to 1881. The lists have no entry for 1876 to 1880, 1881 to 1888 and 1889 to 1891. The last post was in Niksar in 1891/92. For 1892 to 1898 the lists have no entry. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1898/99 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 760 in 1888/89, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
