Life and register readings
Hüseyin Zati Efendi was born in Kütahya in 1858/59 (AH 1275); the father's occupation was "Hattat". At about 17, in 1876/77, Hüseyin Zati began work in Kütahya. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Hüseyin Zati as Emlak Kalemi mülazımı in Kütahya, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1878/79. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1880 give a second post, in Uşak as Emlak Vukuat Kitabeti muavini. Alongside, the lists for 1879 to 1889 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Askerlik kurası. For 1889 to 1891 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin Zati to Deir ez-Zor (Deyrizor) and Basra from 1891 to 1894. Alongside, the lists for 1893 to 1901 give a second post, in Istanbul as Babıali Hazine-i Evrak Kalemi memuru. Basra, about 1,900 km from Kütahya, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 900 in 1892/93, in Basra, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
