Life and register readings
Born in Tokat in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Ohannes Efendi came from the Hristiyan community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Ohannes as Öşür İhale Memuru in Erbaa. The lists have no entry for 1890 to 1896. Next came Muş from 1896 to 1899. Alongside, the lists for 1898 to 1910 give a second post, in Elazığ as Vali Muavini. The last entry, for 1910/11, names Ohannes as Maaş-ı mazuliyet (Tekaüt), with no place. The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1909/10 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 2,252 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 4,500 in 1898/99, as Vali Muavini in Elazığ, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less.
