Life and register readings
Mehmed Fahreddin Efendi was born in Bursa in 1846/47 (AH 1263) into the İslam community. The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in 1858/59, at about 12. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1858/59, names Mehmed Fahreddin as maliye kalemi; mülâzemet, with no place, with a rise to a post in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in 1869/70. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1863/64 and 1868/69.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to 600 in 1878/79, the peak, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 118,200 kuruş, 79 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1886/87.
