Life and register readings

Born in Bursa in 1846/47 (AH 1263), Mehmed Tevfik Efendi came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Eski Bursa muaccelât müdürü". At about 24, in 1871/72, Mehmed Tevfik began work. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, names Mehmed Tevfik as Hüdâvendigâr vilâyet-i celilesi mektubî kalemine mülâzemetle, with no place. For 1883 to 1885, 1886 to 1890, 1891 to 1893 and 1894 to 1900 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1885/86 and Vefat (death) for 1900/01.

Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 600 in 1882/83, when two in three paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 250 kuruş. In all, ten years of salary come to 20,520 kuruş, 41 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
