Life and register readings

Born in Bursa in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the İslam community, Mehmed Said Efendi was the child of a medrese teacher (müderris). Mehmed Said began work in 1867/68, at about 18. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, names Mehmed Said as tahrîrat kalemi; mülâzemetle, with no place. For 1880 to 1891 the lists have no entry.

Pay rose from 333 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 1,000 in 1891/92, as Nufus Nezareti, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1891/92.
