İstepan Efendi was born in Bursa in 1849/50 (AH 1266), within the Hristiyan community. The father’s occupation was Bursa Yenişehir mültezimi. Schooling included Bursa’da Ermeni Sıbyan mektebi. The language repertoire included Armenian and Turkish.^[1]
