Life and register readings
İstepan Efendi was born in Bursa in 1849/50 (AH 1266), into the Hristiyan community, and the father's occupation was "Bursa Yenişehir mültezimi". At about 17, in 1867/68, İstepan began work. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, names İstepan as Mulazemet, with no place. The annual lists then follow İstepan back to Bursa, the birthplace, from 1870 to 1873. Alongside, the lists for 1872/73 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Gemlik ve Mudanya kazaları tapu me’muriyeti. Next came Mudanya from 1874 to 1876. For 1876 to 1878 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1875/76 give a second post, in a post with no place named as istifa (ilâveten). İstepan then moved back to Mudanya from 1878 to 1887. Alongside, the lists for 1886 to 1889 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Bilecik reji müdiriyeti. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1886/87 instead of a title.
The salary went from 202 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 1,000 in 1886/87, the peak, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1888/89.
