Life and register readings
Born in Erzincan, Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the İslam community. Work began in Refahiye in 1871/72 (AH 1288). The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mehmet Tevfik in Refahiye as Yoklama kâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1873 to 1875. Next came Mazgirt and Erzincan from 1875 to 1880, then Kurucay from 1880 to 1889, with a rise to Mal Muduru. For 1878 to 1879 and 1889 to 1891 the lists have no entry. Mehmet Tevfik then moved to a post with no place named from 1891 to 1896. Alongside, the lists for 1895 to 1897 give a second post, in Mardin as Defter-i Hakani memuru. The lists have no entry for 1897 to 1900. Alongside, the lists for 1896/97 give a second post, in Pristina as Defter-i Hakani memuru. The last post was in Gümüşhane in 1900/01. The lists give Infisal for 1888/89 instead of a title. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 760 in 1896/97, in Pristina, when three in four paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 675 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
