Life and register readings
Osman Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1846/47 (AH 1263). At about 23, in 1870/71, Osman began work in Varna, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Osman as Rüsumat müdüriyeti kolcusu in Varna, where the entries run to 1878. From 1878 to 1906 the annual entries place Osman in Istanbul. The lists have no entry for 1887 to 1892. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1878.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 550 in 1905/06, the peak, in Istanbul, when 62 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 32 years the salaries add up to 135,480 kuruş, 85 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
