Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Abbas Efendi began in Taif in 1880/81 (AH 1298); the father's occupation was "Osmanlı ordusunda binbaşı". The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Mehmed Abbas as Tahrirat Kalemi mübeyyiz-i sânisi in Taiz, where the entries run to 1900/01. Alongside, the lists for 1900 to 1902 give a second post, in Safa as Maarif muhasebe memuru refakati. The last posts were in Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1902 to 1905 and Denizli from 1907 to 1909. For 1905 to 1907 the lists have no entry. Denizli, about 2,150 km from Taif, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
