Life and register readings
Salih Hâdım Bey was born in Safranbolu in 1827/28 (AH 1243); the father's occupation was "müsellem". At about 20, in 1847/48, Salih Hâdım began work in Samsun, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1847/48, with Salih Hâdım as tahrirat ve mal kâtibi in Samsun. Next came Canik, Samsun and Istanbul from 1848 to 1872. Alongside, the lists for 1871 to 1879 give a second post, in Beyoğlu as bidayet mahkemesi hukuk dairesi ilamat kalemi müdürü. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1881. Alongside, the lists for 1878/79 give a second post, in Lüleburgaz as bidayet mahkemesi hukuk ve ceza daireleri reisi. The last posts were in Kırklareli from 1881 to 1885. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 8 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1847/48 to 3,000 in 1878/79, the peak, in Lüleburgaz, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 2,800 kuruş. Over 17 years the salaries add up to 338,400 kuruş, 4 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1884/85.
