Life and register readings
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1831/32 (AH 1247), Yani Nikolayadis Efendi was the child of a money-changer (sarraf). Yani Nikolayadis studied at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi).
Work began in 1858/59, at about 27, on a first salary of 1,200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1858/59, with Yani Nikolayadis as Ömer Paşa tercümanı and no place named. Next came Trabzon from 1865 to 1873, then Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1873 to 1875. For 1862 to 1865 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1884 give a second post, in Niš as Başşehbender. The lists give Infisal for 1861/62, 1873/74, 1875/76, 1878/79 and 1883/84 instead of a title.
The salary went from 1,200 kuruş a month in 1858/59 to 5,000 in 1873/74, the peak, in Baghdad, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 169,200 kuruş, 5.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1883/84.
