Life and register readings
Born in Varna in 1849/50 (AH 1266), Zeynelabidin Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Zeynelabidin began work in Varna in 1867/68, at about 17. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Zeynelabidin as Rüsûmat İdaresi mülazımı in Varna, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1869/70. Alongside, the lists for 1869 to 1874 give a second post, in Omurtag as Orman Memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1873 to 1877 give a second post, in Vratsa as Orman Memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1876 to 1878 give a second post, in Niš as Orman Memuru. Next came Florina, Kartal and Ezine from 1878 to 1887. Alongside, the lists for 1886 to 1888 give a second post, in Bayramiç as Düyûn-ı Umûmiye merkez kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1887/88 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Düyûn-ı Umûmiye memuru. Eight places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1869/70, as Orman Memuru in Omurtag, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 16 years pay ended below where it began, 300 kuruş against 600. The last annual entry is for 1887/88.
