Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Salih Efendi began in Medina (Medine) in 1873/74 (AH 1290); the father's occupation was "Asâkir-i Şâhâne mülâzımı". Mehmed Salih began work in Istanbul in 1890/91, at about 17. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Mehmed Salih in Istanbul as Emtiâ-ı Ecnebiye Gümrük Nezareti Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı, where the entries run to 1894/95. Alongside, the lists for 1894 to 1904 give a second post, in Lankaza as Rüsûmat muhafız kolcusu. The last entries, from 1904 to 1909, name Mehmed Salih as Rüsûmat piyade muhafızı, with no place. Lankaza, about 2,350 km from Medina, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1894/95, in Lankaza, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years pay ended where it began, at 250 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
