MUHAMMED SALİH EFENDİ

The life of MUHAMMED SALİH EFENDİ began in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1846/47 (AH 1263). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

Work began in 1864/65, at about 17. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, names MUHAMMED SALİH as Tahrirat kalemi mülazımı, with no place. For 1865 to 1867 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1869 to 1879 give a second post, in Baghdad as Evkaf dairesi başkatibi. At the same time, from 1878 to 1908, the lists also place MUHAMMED SALİH in a post with no place named as Bidayet mahkemesi başkatibi. The lists have no entry for 1904 to 1907. The last post was in Mosul (Musul) in 1909/10, with a rise to Istinaf Mahkemesi Azasi. The lists give Infisal for 1878/79 and Azil (dismissal) for 1903/04 instead of a title. Entries spanning 47 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 8,239 officials.

The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 1,800 in 1880/81, the peak, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,400 kuruş. In all, 39 years of salary come to 547,872 kuruş, 2.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
