Life and register readings
The life of İSMAİL EFENDİ (A) began in Komotini (Gümülcine) in 1845 (AH 1261). İSMAİL (A) studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Komotini in 1869/70, at about 24. Every annual entry from 1869/70 to 1878/79 places İSMAİL (A) in Komotini, the birthplace, first as Tapu Kalemi mülazımı, from 1876/77 as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru) and from 1878/79 as Ticaret Mahkemesi Zabıt Kâtibi. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1878.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1870/71, in Komotini, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. After ten years the salary stood below the first, 235 kuruş against 600. The final annual entry is for 1878/79.
