Life and register readings
The life of SALİH EFENDİ began in Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1850/51 (AH 1267). SALİH studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). Work began in Shkodër in 1869/70, at about 18, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places SALİH in Shkodër, the birthplace, as Rüsûmat Nezareti ambar emini. At the same time, from 1870 to 1874, the lists also place SALİH in Lezhë (Leş) as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru). Alongside, the lists for 1873 to 1877 give a second post, in Shkodër as Rüsûmat Nezareti ambar emini. The annual lists then follow SALİH to Ulcinj (Ülgün) and Shkodër from 1879 to 1882, with a rise to Rüsumat Memuru in 1883/84. Alongside, the lists for 1885/86 give a second post, in Lezhë as Rüsumat Memuru. In place of a title the lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1870/71; Infisal for 1876/77, 1878 and 1879 to 1881; Vefat (death) for 1886/87.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 500 in 1877/78, the peak, when 54 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1886/87.
