Life and register readings

Osman Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1833/34 (AH 1249). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 32, in 1865/66, Osman began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 146 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, names Osman as Hastalar ağası ve vekilharç, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1894 to 1897. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1874/75; Infisal for 1875/76 and 1880/81; Azil (dismissal) for 1878, 1891/92 and 1897/98.

Pay rose from 146 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 1,500 in 1874/75, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,000 kuruş. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 124,980 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
