Life and register readings
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Tokat in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the İslam community; the father was a senior clerk (hacegân). Work began in 1881/82, at about 33. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Osman Nuri as stajyer and no place named. For 1885 to 1888 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Osman Nuri to Istanbul in 1888/89. Alongside, the lists for 1888 to 1908 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Reji İdaresi Kâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1898 to 1907.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 600 in 1891/92, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 300 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
