Life and register readings
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mehmed Bey was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 23, in 1877/78, Mehmed began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1877/78, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mehmed in the same post, Nizamiye Yoklama Kalemi stajyeri, in Istanbul, the birthplace. Of the 1,281 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, 33 stayed in one place throughout.
