Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Said Efendi began in Mecca (Mekke) in 1855/56 (AH 1272); the father's occupation was "Hicaz Vilayeti muhasebesi maaş mukayyidi". The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 12, in 1867/68, Mehmed Said began work. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, names Mehmed Said as Muhasebe Kalemi mülazımı, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1885 to 1893. In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1893/94.
The salary went from 95 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 450 in 1884/85, the peak, when 54 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 14 years the salaries add up to 46,170 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
