Life and register readings
İSMAİL ZÜHDÜ EFENDİ was born in Erbil in 1858/59 (AH 1275); the father's occupation was "Yusufi aşireti reisi". Work began in Erbil in 1879/80, at about 21, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with İSMAİL ZÜHDÜ as Tahrirat kalemi mülazımı in Erbil, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1886/87. At the same time, from 1883 to 1887, the lists also place İSMAİL ZÜHDÜ in a post with no place named as Meclis-i idare kalemi mülazımı. The annual lists then follow İSMAİL ZÜHDÜ to Mecca (Mekke), Damascus (Şam) and Istanbul from 1888 to 1893. The last entry, for 1893/94, names İSMAİL ZÜHDÜ as Üçüncü sınıf polis komiseri, with no place. Mecca, about 1,700 km from Erbil, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 600 in 1889/90, the peak, when two in three paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 250 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
