Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Arif Efendi began in Mecca (Mekke) in 1839/40 (AH 1255). Mehmed Arif studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Mecca in 1849/50, at about 11. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 11 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1849/50, places Mehmed Arif in Mecca, the birthplace, as Hazine mülazımı, where the entries run to 1856/57. Alongside, the lists for 1856 to 1873 give a second post, in Al Hudaydah as Sancak muhasebesi ikinci refiki. The last entries, from 1873 to 1882, name Mehmed Arif as Vilayet muhasebe kalemi memuru, with no place.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to a peak of 2,500 in 1878/79, as Mal Muduru, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 27 years of salary come to 409,500 kuruş, 2.9 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1881/82.
