Life and register readings

Mustafa Zihni Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1838/39 (AH 1254); the father's occupation was "Muhassıl". At about 16, in 1853/54, Mustafa Zihni began work in Istanbul. The first annual entry, for 1853/54, places Mustafa Zihni in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Maliye Mektubî Kalemi mülazımı. Alongside, the lists for 1854 to 1899 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Zimemat Komisyonu kalem memuru. The lists have no entry for 1859 to 1864 and 1865 to 1867. Alongside, the lists for 1895/96 give a second post, in Istanbul as Bulgaristan Prensini karşılama ve uğurlama heyeti reisi. Mustafa Zihni then moved to Crete in 1896/97. The last entries, from 1898 to 1910, name Mustafa Zihni as Ticaret ve Nafia nazırı, with no place. Few careers in the lists are as long; 21 of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 58 years or more.
