Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Şevki Efendi began in Malatya in 1852/53 (AH 1269). Work began in 1877/78, at about 24. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Mehmed Şevki as stajyer and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1890 to 1892. Next came Gürün, Salihli, Söke, Çine and Buldan, five places in ten years, then a return to Salihli from 1906 to 1909. For 1899 to 1901 and 1902 to 1906 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1910/11 give a second post, in Nallıhan as a district governor (Kaymakam). The lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1908/09 instead of a title. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 8 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 1,500 in 1909/10, the peak, as Kaymakam, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 223,260 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
