Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Hâzım Efendi began in Malatya in 1858/59 (AH 1275). Mehmed Hâzım studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 16, in 1875/76, Mehmed Hâzım began work in Izmir (İzmir). The first annual entry, for 1875/76, names Mehmed Hâzım as Tahrirat Kalemi stajyeri, with no place. Mehmed Hâzım then moved to Ayvalık in 1880/81. Alongside, the lists for 1880 to 1883 give a second post, in Dikili as Rüsumat kâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1882 to 1899 give a second post, in a post with no place named as istifa (İnfisal). The lists have no entry for 1884 to 1898.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 300 in 1883/84, as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 13,920 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
