İlyas Şaman Efendi was born in Antakya in 1859/60 (AH 1276). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). İlyas Şaman began work in İskenderun in 1875/76, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, names İlyas Şaman as Rüsumat stajyeri, with no place. For 1880 to 1886 the lists have no entry.
