Life and register readings
Born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the İslam community, MUHAMMET ŞAFİK EFENDİ was the child of a muezzin. The schooling was at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1900/01, MUHAMMET ŞAFİK began work, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, names MUHAMMET ŞAFİK as Emlak-i hümayun şubesi korucusu, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1901 to 1904 and 1906 to 1909. The annual lists then follow MUHAMMET ŞAFİK to Kirkuk in 1909/10. Alongside, the lists for 1909/10 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Nüfus memuru. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1905/06.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 300 in 1904/05, the peak, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 13,200 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
