Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Süleyman Efendi came from the İslam community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1897/98, at about 25, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, places Süleyman in Aleppo as Halep numûne tarlası müdir muâvinliği. At the same time, from 1898 to 1904, the lists also place Süleyman in a post with no place named as zirâat hey’et-i fenniyyesi muhâsebesinde zabıta-ı sıhhıyye-i hayvaniye (Okunamadı) mukayyidliği. For 1901 to 1903 the lists have no entry.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 1,500 in 1903/04, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 54,900 kuruş, 2.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
