Life and register readings

The life of Mustafa Efendi began in Deyr-i Alûr in 1835/36 (AH 1251). At about 31, in 1866/67, Mustafa began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, places Mustafa in Istanbul as Zabtiye alayı ikinci tabur dördüncü teftiş memuru, where the entries run to 1869/70. Mustafa then moved to Palu and Ovacık from 1876 to 1882, with a rise to Mal Muduru in 1880/81. Alongside, the lists for 1881/82 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Nakil. The annual lists then follow Mustafa to Nazımiye (Kızılkilise) from 1882 to 1884. Alongside, the lists for 1883 to 1886 give a second post, in Çemişgezek as Sertahsildar. Next came Ovacık in 1887/88. The last entries, from 1890 to 1897, name Mustafa as Vergi tahrir kâtibi, with no place. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1869/70, 1875/76, 1878/79 and 1885/86; Azil (dismissal) for 1883/84 and 1887/88; İstifa (resignation) for 1893/94.

The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 500 in 1890/91, the peak, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 92,640 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
