Life#
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Dera in 1888/89 (AH 1306) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hüseyin Hüsnü also attended the telegraph school, wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1907/08, at about 18, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Hüseyin Hüsnü in Istanbul in the Muhtedi Kalemi.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1907/08, in the Muhtedi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
