Life

Mustafa Halid Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (gümrük memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Halid also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Istanbul in 1904/05, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Mustafa Halid in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Sehir Posta Memuru.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Sehir Posta Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
