Life and register readings
Born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), MUHAMMED TEVFİK EFENDİ was the child of a cavalryman holding a fief (sipahi). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1887/88, MUHAMMED TEVFİK began work in Kirkuk. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, names MUHAMMED TEVFİK as mülazım (muhasebe kalemi), with no place. The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1894. Alongside, the lists for 1894/95 give a second post, in Erbil as ağnam tadad müfettiş katibi ve kabızmal (muvakkat). The annual lists then follow MUHAMMED TEVFİK to Kifri (Salahiye) from 1895 to 1898. The last posts were in Kirkuk, the birthplace, from 1898 to 1901.
The salary went from 360 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 607.5 in 1898/99, the peak, in Kirkuk, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
